[C2] VIN Number Problems and Solutions

From: Doe, Jack
Subject: Missing VIN on my 66... Help!!!

David... I have owned my 66 roadster for just under 11 years. I am getting ready to sell it and I have been made aware that the VIN number plate under the glove box is gone. My restoration pictures show it wasn't their during the ground up restoration. Where can I find the VIN on the frame?

Thanks,
Jack

Jack,

You have a real problem. Depending on what state you are in you will probably need a form from the DMV called a Verification of Authenticity signed by a police officer. This form will verify the car you own matches your title. With this form signed by a police officer you can then try for a reproduction VIN plate.

The only way you can verify your Corvette's VIN is by checking the frame numbers. The hidden frame numbers are located in two places on the left rail of your frame. The first set of numbers are located about eight to ten inches in front of the left rear kick up near where the seat belt is located. The second set of numbers are located on the top rear section of the left rear kick up.

Both sets are real hard to find, however the very rear set would be the easiest to start with. If your car has what I call a real perfect non rusted California frame you will be able to bring them up with a little sand paper and a mirror. If your car is a typical back east rusted car you can still bring the numbers up using acids, but it usually requires removing the body or cutting a very large hole in the left rear floor of the body.

In California if you were to take your Corvette to the Highway Patrol for a verification they might just impound it like they did to a friend of mine. If none of your numbers match then you are in real trouble. If all your other paper work is in order you might be able to get a salvage title with new numbers.

Pull your left rear wheel off and shine a light between the frame rail and body. Look for a very slight indention in the frame where the numbers are stamped. Clean that spot with 280 sand paper and a little brake kleen. Stick a real small mirror between the frame and body and see what you find.

If you can locate the correct numbers call a police officer over to verify them. Have your form ready when he comes over.
